How to Make Cinnamon French Toast with Caramelized Apples — A Cozy Skillet Breakfast

Cinnamon French toast with caramelized apples turns a simple skillet breakfast into something that feels special enough for a weekend brunch. Thick bread absorbs a lightly spiced custard, while apples cook separately until tender, glossy, and deeply flavored with butter and brown sugar.

Use bread that is slightly dry rather than ultra-fresh so it can soak up custard without falling apart. Keep the skillet at medium heat so the centers have time to set before the outside gets too dark.

What You’ll Need Before You Start

  • Large nonstick or cast-iron skillet
  • Shallow mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Spatula
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons

How to Make It

Apple slices caramelizing in butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a skillet.
Cook the apples until they are tender but still hold their shape. The syrup should cling to the fruit instead of pooling thinly in the pan.
  1. Caramelize the apples first. Melt 1½ tablespoons butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced apples, brown sugar, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, and lemon juice. Cook 7–9 minutes, stirring gently, until the apples are tender and the sauce looks glossy. Transfer to a bowl and cover loosely.
  2. Make the custard. In a shallow bowl, whisk eggs, milk, vanilla, the remaining teaspoon cinnamon, and salt until the yolks and whites are completely blended.
  3. Preheat the skillet. Wipe out the skillet if needed and return it to medium heat. Add a small amount of the remaining butter. The butter should foam gently without browning immediately.
  4. Dip the bread briefly. Place one or two slices in the custard for about 10–15 seconds per side. Let excess drip back into the bowl. Thick dry bread should absorb custard without becoming floppy or saturated through the middle.
  5. Cook the first side. Lay the soaked slices in the buttered skillet without crowding. Cook 2–3 minutes until the underside is evenly golden and the edges look set.
  6. Flip and finish. Turn with a wide spatula and cook another 2–3 minutes. The center should feel slightly springy rather than wet when gently pressed. Adjust the heat lower if the outside colors before the center sets.
  7. Keep warm between batches. Transfer finished slices to a wire rack set over a baking sheet in a 200°F oven while you cook the remaining bread, adding butter to the pan as needed.
  8. Top and serve. Rewarm the apples briefly if necessary, then spoon them and their cinnamon glaze over the French toast. Add maple syrup or powdered sugar just before serving.

Medium heat gives the custard enough time to cook through while the outside becomes golden rather than scorched.

Recipe tip: If your bread is very fresh, leave the slices uncovered for 30–60 minutes before cooking. Slightly dry bread absorbs custard more evenly.

Food safety: Cook French toast until the egg custard is fully set in the center. Keep the raw egg mixture away from cooked slices and clean utensils between uses.
