Oven-baked BBQ chicken drumsticks are an easy way to get juicy chicken with a sticky, caramelized glaze without standing over a grill. The best method bakes the seasoned chicken first, then adds barbecue sauce near the end so the sugars can set without burning.
Drying the chicken and giving each drumstick a little space helps the skin brown before the sauce goes on. Two thin coats of sauce create better glaze than one heavy coat.

Ingredients
- 3 pounds chicken drumsticks, about 10–12
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1½ teaspoons smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar, optional
- 1¼ cups barbecue sauce, divided

How to Make It

- Preheat the oven. Heat the oven to 425°F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil for easier cleanup and place a wire rack on top if available.
- Dry the chicken. Pat the drumsticks thoroughly dry with paper towels. Surface moisture delays browning and can make the skin rubbery.
- Season every side. Toss chicken with olive oil, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and optional brown sugar until evenly coated. Keep raw-chicken utensils separate from the sauce brush you will use later.
- Arrange with space. Place drumsticks on the rack or pan with a little room between them. Bake 25 minutes without sauce so the exterior begins to brown and render.
- Turn and continue baking. Flip the drumsticks and bake another 10 minutes. At this point the skin should look browned and the internal temperature should be climbing steadily.
- Apply the first glaze. Brush a thin layer of barbecue sauce over all exposed surfaces. Bake 7 minutes, then turn the drumsticks and brush with another thin layer. Do not pour used sauce from a raw-chicken bowl over cooked chicken.
- Set the glaze and check temperature. Bake another 5–8 minutes until the sauce is sticky and caramelized. Chicken must reach at least 165°F; drumsticks often become more tender around 175–185°F because the connective tissue has more time to soften.
- Rest and serve. Remove from the oven and let the drumsticks rest 5 minutes. Brush with a little reserved clean barbecue sauce if you want a glossier finish, then serve.

Recipe tip: Thin coats of barbecue sauce set faster and turn stickier than one heavy coat. Brush, bake, then brush again.
Food safety: Cook chicken to at least 165°F in the thickest part without touching the bone. Never reuse sauce or a brush that contacted raw chicken unless the sauce is boiled and the brush is thoroughly cleaned.
